There are some reasons
for the good preservation of Dongjiakou Great
Wall. First, Qi Jiguang sent 3,000 soldiers with
firelocks from Jinhua District to protect the
Great wall, and their families settled here with
them for their reassurance. So Dongjiakou is a
typical village of the descendants of the soldiers,
who regarded the Great Wall as their family heirloom.
Now there are 123 families, 439 people in the
village with 6 family names,Chen, Li, Geng, Sun,
Zhao and Zhang. Another reason is that in this
area, the mountain is high, and the paths are
dangerous, with lots of wild animals, therefore,
people seldom come here.
After 600 years of rest, Dongjiakou Great Wall
sees tourists from home and abroad. Having taken
a trip of 40 km from Qinhuangdao City to the foot
of the mountain, tourists can reach the top towers
along the paths in a little more than 1 hour to
have a bird¡¯s-eye view of the magnificent Great
Wall and the beautiful scenery around it.

Dongjiakou Great Wall runs over the mountains in
the northeast of Zhuchaoying Town, Funing County,
Hebei Province. It is the north wing of The first
Pass in Shanhaiguan and it was Qi Jiguang who wrote
to the Emperor in favor of the its building. The
Great Wall is 8.9 km long, with the highest place
556 meters above sea level. On the Great Wall ,
36 enemy towers, 26 fight towers, 16 beacon towers
and 3 castles were built. All are preserved well
except the castles.
As is recorded, Dongjiakou Great Wall was rebuilt
on the basis of Beiqi Great Wall in 1381. It was
built in different styles, especially Lijia Tower,
Chenjia Tower and Gengjia Tower. The stones at these
entrances are carved with beautiful pictures, vivid
and exquisite.
As Hao sanjin, a member of the Chinese Great Wall
Institute, researcher of the Cultural Bureau of
Qinhuangdao City, says, Dongjiakou Great Wall keeps
the original style and features much better than
any other part of the Great Wall, and the stone
carving which represents the culture of South Fujian
brought in by General Qi Jiguang, who built the
Great Wall ,is unique in the country.
